Master thesis nr 7. Leveraging AI and Machine Learning to Optimize Care Home Planning and Workflows

Senior Care is a mounting challenge across the western world, which drive the need for time and resource efficient solutions:

• Aging population in Europe and North America where the senior population will increase by ~50% in 30 years. The Old Age Dependency Ration (ODAR, rate between population over and under 65 years of age) is set to almost double in the same time frame.

• Staff shortages where Europe is expected to be severely short of healthcare workers by 2030. The demographic changes will make staffing increasingly difficult and on top of this there is high staff turnover in this profession.

• Financial challenges leading to societies struggle to provide enough Senior Care capacity.

For care organizations to give care and other services to elderly there is opportunities to improve planning, workflows and individual adaptations. Analytics and Insights are growing in this segment and are ways to improve the situation, also using AI will give additional value.

What this thesis includes:

In short, we would like to use data from care homes and apply analytics using Machine Learning and AI to better understand how planning, workflows and individual adaptations can be improved.

Areas to investigate are for example:

• Organizational efficiency related data collected in the care home that can improve performance and workflows as well as resource utilization and operational efficiency.

• Individual patterns for a care recipient based on data collected in the care home. This can help identify specific needs and preferences of each resident. This includes tracking daily activities, sleep patterns and alarm events. By understanding these patterns, care homes can tailor their care plans to better meet the unique needs of each resident, thus enhancing their overall well-being.

Results from the master thesis would for example be:

• Create solution that detects unusual changes or emerging trends in the data and notifies automatically of these changes

• Based on manual conditions, detect changes in the data that are important and when the insights are triggered shown in a dashboard

• Find new interesting insights to use in the daily work of care staff

We look forward to receiving your application with your resumé and university grades and hearing your ideas on how you would approach this subject!
