Master Thesis nr. 4 - Increased efficiency in hospitals by smart access solutions.

Background

With the increasing demand for streamlined processes, security, and convenience in healthcare facilities, smart door solutions; leveraging technologies such as AI, biometrics, and advanced sensors, present significant opportunities for operational improvements. The project’s relevance lies in its potential to support hospitals in achieving higher efficiency, improved security, and greater user satisfaction through innovative access systems in the future.

Objective

  • To advance hospital efficiency, security, and user experience by exploring and demonstrating the impact of intelligent, seamless access solutions.
  • To create a vision and develop methods for data-driven, user-centric and customer-centric access systems, enabling ASSA ABLOY to rapidly innovate and adapt its solutions across hospitals and other building types.
  • To inspire innovation in hospital operations by demonstrating the real-world impact of intelligent access technologies.

Research Approach

  1. Review of concept projects and future smart door technologies and access systems.
  2. Field Study in Hospitals: Assessing Current Door Systems and Processes. To gain practical insights, the project will involve one or more hospitals as case study sites. Through interviews, observations, and process mapping, the current efficiency, security, and convenience of hospital door systems will be documented. Both the flow of patients and assets through the hospital and the ways in which hospital staff interact with and use door and access systems, ensuring a comprehensive evaluation of efficiency improvements.
  3. Comparative Analysis: Identifying Gaps and Opportunities. This analysis will focus on areas where efficiency, security, and user convenience can be improved, as well as the barriers to adoption and integration of new technologies.
  4. Scope Narrowing: Selecting key user journeys and use cases for detailed Study. Based on the initial findings, the thesis will narrow its scope to focus on the biggest gaps which can give most impact.
  5. Evaluation: Concept testing of smart door solutions will be conducted in real hospital environments. Key metrics such as efficiency, security, and user-centric metrics will be assessed and analysed, with anticipated results translated into financial impact.
  6. Framework integration and Proof-of-Concept: Incorporate measured results into the assessment framework, and apply the framework in a proof-of-concept to simulate and model user journeys and hospital processes. Use the framework to calculate and present operational gains in selected hospitals and across different setups.

Expected Outcome

  • A reusable, evidence-based assessment framework for evaluating the value of smart door solutions in hospital environments, including integrated financial modelling.
  • Proof-of-concept application of the framework in selected hospitals and operational setups, with quantified gains in efficiency, security, user experience, and financial outcomes.
  • A digital prototype or concept of the framework to be able to support product development teams.
  • Actionable insights and recommendations for future product development and hospital operations, based on real-world findings.
