The Director of Engineering is responsible for leading the engineering efforts within a specific business unit, ensuring the successful delivery of high-quality products and fostering a culture of technical excellence across distributed teams. This role requires a blend of technical expertise, strategic thinking, and people management skills across geographical boundaries and through an indirect people management model driven by influencing. While team members report directly to their local leaders, the Director of Engineering will provide functional leadership, ensuring alignment with broader product and engineering goals.

As our Director, Engineering you’ll support HID’s success by:
Technical Leadership:
- Lead the development and execution of the technical roadmap for the business unit, in alignment with product and business goals
- Provide guidance on technical architecture, system design, and engineering best practices, ensuring the scalability, reliability, and security of solutions
- Oversee key technical decisions and ensure that teams are using appropriate tools, frameworks, and methodologies (e.g., Agile, DevOps, CI/CD)
- Stay current with emerging technologies and trends, driving innovation and continuous improvement within the engineering function
Recruitment, Team Management and Development:
- While engineering team members report to local leaders, the Director of Engineering is responsible for providing functional leadership and mentoring across teams within the business unit
- Work closely with local leaders to ensure that the engineering talent aligns with the unit’s technical direction and growth objectives
- Promote a culture of collaboration, open communication, and shared ownership across distributed teams
- Act as a mentor and coach to engineering leads and senior engineers within the function, fostering a supportive and high-performing environment
- Ensure consistency in team development, training opportunities, and career progression across locations, in partnership with local leaders
- Participate in the recruitment of talent, focusing on mid and senior level roles, by providing a second opinion of candidates in the final interview round
Product Delivery:
- Partner with product management and other cross-functional teams to define product requirements, timelines, and deliverables
- Ensure timely and efficient delivery of product releases, while managing trade-offs between scope, time, and resources
- Collaborate with other engineering leaders, especially across shared product efforts, to drive consistency and reduce duplication of effort
- Ensure the adoption of agile methodologies, sprint planning, and efficient workflows that enable timely delivery and quick iteration
Process Optimization:
- Establish and continuously improve engineering processes, including code quality standards, testing, release cycles, and incident management
- Implement best practices for monitoring and improving performance using agreed frameworks such as DORA and SPACE
- Champion the adoption of automation, DevOps practices, and lean engineering methodologies to optimize workflows and improve productivity
Stakeholder Management:
- Act as the primary engineering point of contact for business unit leadership, providing regular updates on progress, risks, and roadmaps
- Build strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including product, marketing, and sales teams, ensuring alignment with broader business objectives
- Work closely with location leaders to address region-specific challenges and opportunities
Resource Planning and Budgeting:
- Plan investments in alignment with the directions given by the BA VP of Engineering including but limited to site strategy and shared resources/services
- Plan and manage the engineering budget for the business unit, ensuring efficient use of resources and alignment with business goals
- Partner with applicable local leaders on their resource and budget planning to ensure alignment with the Business Unit needs
- Approve funding of Epics and Features as a Business Owner
- Ensure that sufficient investments are done in accordance with the agreed capacity allocation guardrails (Features, Enablers, Security and Compliance, Technical Debt and Sustaining/Support)
- Collaborate with HR and recruitment teams, in partnership with local leaders, to attract, hire, and retain top engineering talent across multiple locations

Your Experience and Education include:
- Bachelor's or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field or related practical proven experience
- 10+ years of experience in software development or engineering leadership roles
- Deep understanding of software development life cycles, agile methodologies, cloud infrastructure, and system design with 10+ years of experience in these fields
- Proven experience with large-scale systems, distributed architectures, and complex product portfolios which are consumed externally by customers and partners
- 10+ years of experience managing and scaling engineering teams, including remote and distributed teams
- Strong coaching and mentoring skills, with a track record of developing technical talent and fostering inclusive, collaborative team cultures by practicing servant leadership
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to translate complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders
