Mechanical/Structural Project Engineer

ASSA ABLOY Entrance Systems, Hangar and Large Application Doors, a global supplier of entrance automation systems, is seeking candidates for a Project Engineer position in our engineering department, located in Peachtree City, GA. 

JOB SUMMARY:

The Megadoor engineer designs custom large application door systems found in aircraft hangars, ships yards, rocket launch facilities, mining operations and other large opening industrial applications.  The workflow is typical of a design/build firm, where we design, fabricate, and install doors in conjunction with general contractors, architects, engineers, and government organizations.  We are seeking a Project Engineer to design project door systems, truss structures which support large door systems, and to develop a family of standard self-supporting truss structures for high volume door sizes. 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Lead structural design decisions for Megadoor project door workflow
  • Represent the department in client facing project engineering discussions
  • Educate team members on all aspects of structural engineering
  • Design Megadoor systems (shop drawings, assembly drawings, door system calculations)
  • Assist in manufacturing issues (e.g. design modification to accommodate supply chain issues)
  • Assist with installation issues (e.g. design modification to accommodate integration with building steel)
  • Develop engineering group standard work instructions for structural engineering calculations
  • Be a team player with an optimistic “can do” attitude

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of US structural codes: ASCE7, AISC360, ACI 318, AWS 1.1/1.2, IBC, Aluminum Design Guide
  • Experience designing HSS box trusses
  • Experience with steel connection design
  • Strong 2D drafting & 3D modelling skillset
  • Experience with code driven FEA software (RISA, STAAD, etc.)
  • FEA experience (we use Abaqus & Inventor Pro)
  • Exposure to Python, C#, C++, VB, or other coding languages (like to have)

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

  • BS Civil, Mechanical or Aerospace engineering (required)
  • MS Civil, Mechanical or Aerospace engineering (preferred)
  • Minimum (5) years post terminal degree experience designing US building structures (or similar)

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT/PHSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Office environment
  • 10-20% travel to job sites
  • Prototyping / lab validation work
  • Ability to access military & restricted government facilities (required: US citizen or green card holder)
