Position Summary
The Buyer oversees strategic and tactical procurement of raw materials, parts, components, equipment, and general corporate services. This position manages end-to-end buying cycles through approved vendors, utilizes Materials Requirements Planning (MRP) within the Epicor system, leads supplier development, and maintains healthy inventory turns across the product lifecycle. The role heavily coordinates cross-functional activities to align sourcing directly with manufacturing schedules, product engineering, quality metrics, and company financial goals.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Sourcing & Procurement: Procure custom components, raw materials, capital equipment, supplies, and operational services necessary for corporate manufacturing throughput.
- MRP Optimization: Interpret production schedules to determine material requirements. Generate and track purchase orders via Epicor MRP, balancing safe stock limits with aggressive inventory turn metrics.
- Data Management: Establish, audit, and optimize planning architecture, supplier records, and inventory replenishment variables inside the Epicor system environment.
- Strategic Cross-Collaboration: Engage deeply with Production, Engineering, Accounting, Quality, and Sales to correct active Bills of Materials (BOMs), root-out production costs, improve incoming material quality, and protect delivery expectations.
- Lean Sourcing Initiatives: Champion continuous improvement routines using Lean methodologies to identify, tag, and permanently clear stagnant, excess, or obsolete materials.
- Financial & Cash Flow Support: Drive targeted inventory reduction plans to systematically enhance free cash flow and optimize capital utilization.
- Commercial Negotiations: Organize structured RFQ packages, source competitive bids, and audit supplier purchasing agreements to ensure optimal quality-to-cost distributions.
- Inventory Auditing: Provide planning, validation, and physical auditing support during the company's annual comprehensive physical inventory cycles.
- Metrics & KPI Accountability: Manage and report personal sourcing metrics contributing directly to departmental KPIs, covering inventory velocity, purchase price variance, and specific supplier performance scores (quality, logistics, and service).
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required
- Sourcing Experience: 3–5 years of progressive buyer experience managing highly specialized technical items, custom configurations, and lower-volume, long-lead supplier bases.
- Supply Chain Competence: Demonstrated understanding of extended global supply chains, international trade regulations, logistics networks, and tariff management frameworks.
- Systems Mastery: Functional proficiency with ERP/MRP database software (Epicor platform exposure highly advantageous) and intermediate-to-advanced proficiency within Microsoft Office (specifically Excel data compilation).
- Workforce Adaptability: Proven capacity to operate seamlessly across a diverse organization, effectively translating constraints between formal corporate offices and active fabrication floors.
- Resilience & Organization: Superior organizational habits with a clear track record of self-prioritization and emotional poise in an execution-critical, deadline-driven environment.
Preferred Special Commodity Competencies
- Direct procurement knowledge or industrial market background sourcing raw Steel or Aluminum components.
- Prior exposure to contracting custom complex fabrications, outsourced assemblies, or heavy industrial toll operations.
- Buying familiarity with electronic components, hardware assemblies, or integrated control systems architectures.
Education and Experience Requirements
- Experience: Prefer 3 to 5 years of active professional experience within an industrial, manufacturing, or heavy machinery buyer capacity.
- Education: High School Diploma or equivalent required. Documented continuing professional education or degrees in Supply Chain, Logistics, or Business are valued.
