Design Engineer

Mechanical Design Engineer
We are seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer to develop and support innovative, highly configurable automatic door solutions from concept through production release. In this role, you will be responsible for designing new products and product enhancements, creating prototypes, validating performance, and supporting manufacturing implementation.
Working both independently and within a collaborative engineering team, you will translate business and customer needs into practical, manufacturable solutions that deliver value to installers, end users, and manufacturing operations. Success in this role requires strong mechanical design expertise, hands-on problem-solving skills, and the ability to drive projects from initial concept through commercialization.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and develop new automatic door products, options, and product enhancements while balancing performance, cost, reliability, manufacturability, and product configurability.
- Partner with product management, manufacturing, sourcing, field service, and other stakeholders to gather requirements and transform them into effective engineering solutions.
- Create and maintain 3D CAD models, detailed manufacturing drawings, multi-level bills of material (BOMs), and complete product documentation.
- Build, test, and evaluate prototypes; develop test plans, analyze results, and implement design improvements based on findings.
- Apply sound engineering principles related to material selection, tolerance analysis, GD&T, and electromechanical integration.
- Support product industrialization activities including design for manufacturing and assembly (DFMA), pilot builds, engineering change orders (ECOs), and production launches.
- Work closely with manufacturing and supply chain teams to ensure successful product implementation and ongoing product support.
- Manage multiple projects and priorities, effectively communicating progress, risks, and recommendations to cross-functional teams.
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives focused on product quality, documentation standards, release processes, and configurable product platforms.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related technical discipline.
- Minimum of 2 years of product design experience, preferably in electromechanical, hardware, building products, or related industries.
- Proficiency in 3D CAD software; SolidWorks experience strongly preferred.
- Experience creating detailed manufacturing drawings, assemblies, and multi-level BOMs.
- Hands-on experience working in an engineering laboratory, prototype shop, or similar technical environment.
- Working knowledge of aluminum, steel, and glass design applications.
- Experience performing tolerance stack-up analysis and applying GD&T principles.
- Familiarity with basic electromechanical systems and component integration.
- Strong organizational, communication, and project management skills with the ability to manage multiple assignments simultaneously.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with DraftSight or other 2D CAD software.
- Product data management (PDM) experience, preferably Teamcenter.
- Project management software experience, such as Jira.
- CNC machining or manufacturing process knowledge.
- Experience with DFMA principles, supplier collaboration, and engineering release processes.
- Advanced Excel skills, including VBA and macros.
- Experience designing configurable or option-based product platforms.
- Familiarity with finite element analysis (FEA) or similar engineering analysis tools.
What Success Looks Like
Successful candidates consistently deliver high-quality designs that are released on schedule, meet performance and cost objectives, and are supported by thorough documentation and validation. Designs transition smoothly into production, minimize manufacturing disruption, and provide long-term value through reliable performance and effective sustaining engineering support.
