Packaging Engineer Intern

 

Job Summary

Working closely with a Packaging Engineer, you'll be assisting a team of design professionals gaining practical experience in designing and developing new packaging using CAD and other design tools. You will also be involved with producing, assembling and testing prototypes to evaluate new product concepts.  Through this job you will gain experience with packaging design and packaging testing and prototype creation.

 

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • (40%) Designs and improves packaging for all of ASSA ABLOY products.

a) Design product packaging using a CAD system.  This would include any and all parts of the product packaging, clear pack, cardboard, foam etc.

b) Make 2D dimensional drawings when required which would include all dimensions, specification and testing requirements that packaging components must meet to protect and display the product per CTQ’s.

c) Review and direct design and or drawing changes to ensure packaging is meeting all requirements.

d) Maintain and update packaging specifications and standards as required.

  • (30%) Write test plans / Requests for testing and evaluation of package designs for all ASSA ABLOY products.

a) Write comprehensive test plans that will ensure the packaging will meet all customer CTQ’s and packaging design specifications.

b) Evaluate and Test when required any and all NPI product designs, VAVE / sustaining changes and supplier moves.

c) Write design and test specifications to support continuous improvement of our packaging standards.

  • (20%) Support sourcing / Cost-Improvement efforts.

a) Works with sourcing, suppliers and manufacturing plants to identify packaging quality improvements as well as cost savings

  • (5%) Execute multiple packaging projects simultaneously, with particular attention to quality, function, cost and schedule.
  • (5%) Performs complex technical research and presents conclusions in a clear and concise manner based on organized data.

 

ADDITIONAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Other duties as required by supervisor.

 

Education and Experience Profile

• Enrolled in Bachelor’s degree program focusing on Packaging Engineering

• Prior work experience (related or non-related)

Technical/Functional Competencies:

• Expertise in the selection and application of sound engineering practices and principles to the design and development of high volume consumer products packaging.

• Knowledge of materials, equipment, and processes required in the production of consumer packaging.

• Creative, highly motivated self-driven individual with the demonstrated ability to independently complete engineering tasks. 

• Recognized ability to consistently provide reliable advice and recommendations.

• Solid organization, communication and interpersonal skills with the ability and desire to contribute within a multi-functional team environment.

• Knowledge of CAD drafting and Artios CAD; Creo or SolidWorks acceptable

• Effective PC skills required, Excel, Word, Power Point MS Project.

 

Required Skills

  • 2nd year in packaging program minimum

 

Work Environment:

Working conditions are normal for an office environment.
