Toolmaker
Purpose of the Role:
This Job Description is unique to the Assa Abloy operations in South Africa and applies to all South African factories. To perform the requirements as listed below:
Responsibilities / Accountabilities:
- Cutting and shaping the part using a combination of lathes, presses, grinders, and cutting machine
- Checking the item’s dimensions with measuring instruments like micrometres and gauges.
- Maintain and support Engineering, Production and other departments.
- Implement strategic plans and objectives and take suitable corrective and preventive actions to maintain these goals.
- Obey reasonable instructions as issued by Engineering Manager and Senior Management Staff.
- Service and repairs tools, dies, jigs, fixtures and other precision parts and equipment to fine tolerances for the machine tools and other production machinery.
- Performs standby functions.
- Studies drawings and specifications to determine dimensions and tolerances of products to be manufactured.
- Positions, measures and marks out metal stock or castings.
- Fits and assembles tools, test-operates and modifies them.
- May dismantle faulty machine tools and machines and repair or replace defective tools, dies and fixtures.
- May braze parts during assembly.
- May design tools and equipment.
- Other activities that you may be responsible from time to time.

- Design of Press and Die Cast Tooling
- Basic Costing of Tooling programs
- Knowledge of Materials and their surface and heat treatment
- Understanding of Health and Safety requirements to the OHSA
- Safety Regulations on Electrical Compliance
- Safety Regulation on General Machine Regulation
- Disciplinary code of conduct
- Basic Conditions of employment
Essential Qualifications and Experience
- N3 Technical Qualification
- Qualified Tradesman as Tool, Jig & Die Maker
- Minimum 3 years post apprenticeship experience in related industries
