The vital role of the Vice President of Engineering within the Secure Issuance Business Area requires an initiative-taking and detail-oriented individual to sustain its continued growth and drive future innovation. A key focus in this role will be to drive all R&D initiatives, overseeing the innovation of our Desktop products globally. This position in our organization allows a person to showcase their skills to lead our R&D team to deliver high quality products, timely and efficiently.

As our VP Engineering, you’ll support HID’s success by:
• Leading and directing global R&D team for the continued growth and profitability of industry leading Desktop identity issuance solutions.
• Setting R&D vision and direction by both leading and motivating a diverse, multi-site global team, mentoring talent, and fostering both innovation and professional growth.
• Identifying and building common product platforms from which multiple branded products are developed.
• Creating an R&D Structure to develop the common platforms and derived products with speed and efficiency.
• Executing development projects using SAFe/Agile development framework using the lean principles.
• Achieving significant organizational synergies within this newly formed R&D group.
• Directing and controlling the activities of the R&D functional area through multiple levels of management within the organization.
• Overseeing the R&D planning, staffing (internal and external), budgeting, and managing expenses while leading changes to methods, practices, or policies to ensure achievement of objectives.
• Employing industry best practices to align R&D strategic plans and objectives with business goals to drive innovation, address technical debt, advance system architecture, and improve processes.
• Working with the Desktop product management functional area to help break down business directives into technology goals, define technical feasibility, and shape product roadmaps.
• Aligning with the other R&D leaders within the functional area to ensure that technical platforms are shared where appropriate and products are interoperable with other HID offerings where applicable.
• Overseeing multiple R&D projects / initiatives and ensure timely delivery with risk mitigation.
• Ensuring products meet regulatory standards and oversee testing processes for reliability and compliance.
• Providing key stakeholders within the organization with visibility into the ongoing activities of the R&D functional area, the tracking of its key performance indicators, and an assessment of its evolving impact over time.
• Negotiating critical and controversial issues with top-level engineers and key stakeholders within other parts of the organization.
• Representing the R&D functional area at important functions or conferences, including media interviews as required.
• Participating in the design of and communicate an executive-level strategy for R&D.
• Participating in the company’s Technology Council and function as a recognized technical leader within HID and across ASSA ABLOY divisions.
Your Experience and Background include:
• Bachelor's degree from four-year college or university (a master’s degree or additional training preferred); or at least 15 years related experience and / or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience (including supervisory experience)
• 15+ years of R&D leadership experience
• Experience in leading R&D projects from concept to production, including budget ownership
• A strong technical background in electro-mechanical hardware and software development
• A proven record of driving product innovation (Pre-Product Innovation, New Product Innovation, and Continuous Product Innovation) throughout the entire development lifecycle
• Excellent leadership and communication skills to manage cross-functional teams and collaborate with remote teams as well as third-party providers
• Demonstrated capability in product development using the Minimum Viable Product (MVP) approach.
• Familiarity with industry standards and has experience with emerging technologies such as IoT, AI, cloud-connected software and hardware platforms
• A strong history of building and managing highly effective R&D teams in industries and markets like HID’s
• Able to consistently make timely decisions and balance systematic analysis with decisiveness, even in the face of complexity
• Meticulous and thorough, with the ability to think “big picture” and understand the key trends and levers that drive the business
