R&D Welding Technician

The R&D Welding Technician position is in our Carrollton, TX, facility.

 

Position Summary:  The R&D Welding Technician/Lab Technician will be responsible for welding a variety of materials and processes including MIG, TIG, SMARC, or brazing.  Core responsibilities are to fabricate or repair products such as first article designs, machine parts, plant equipment, jigs, and fixtures. Secondary responsibilities will be to maintain the R&D Lab and monitor testing under engineering supervision.   

 

 

  1. Description of Essential Job Functions: 

  • Weld metal parts together using both gas welding or brazing and any combination of arc welding processes. 

  • Perform related tasks such as thermal cutting and grinding. 

  • Repair broken or cracked parts, fill holes, and increase size of metal parts. 

  • Position and clamp together components of fabricated metal products preparatory to welding. 

  • Assist in R&D testing by setting up tests and/or monitoring and recording test data.

Education and Experience: 

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required. 

  • Completion of a three- to five-year apprenticeship program through an employer or trade union is a plus. 

  • Degree or certificate in a maintenance or technical field from a trade, technical school, or community college is a plus.  Welding emphasis preferred. 

  • Practical experience with manufacturing, assembly, and welding equipment. 

 

Computer Skills 

  • Basic working knowledge and experience with Microsoft Office Suite and other computer-based applications preferred. 

 

Certificates, Certifications, Licenses, Registrations: 

  • Certified Welder

  • Ability to write simple correspondence.

  • Hands-on approach to problem solving and analysis. 

  • Ability to design, build, fabricate, and weld projects.

  • Advanced knowledge of jig and fixture construction and their application is essential.

  • Excellent skill with thermal cutting tools such as Plasma, Arc Gouge, or Oxyacetylene. 

  • Ability to troubleshoot and track equipment issues to perform root cause analysis and support corrective actions.  

  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. 

  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment to effectively address and resolve all maintenance issues. 

  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.  

  • Ability to read and comprehend detailed engineering drawings, plans, simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. 

  • Work in a safety-first manner while adhering to other Company and regulatory environmental, health, and safety policies/standards. 

  • Understands and interpret general dimension and tolerances (GDT) to apply to the assembly and fabrication of prototype or first run parts. 

  • Working knowledge of various manual/air/electrically operated tools and jigs including wrenches, crimp tools, soldering irons, drills, grinders, surface mount technology machines, wire wrap tools and strippers, spray degreasers or cleaning units. 

  • Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization. 

  • Advanced knowledge of various manual/air/electrically operated tools and jigs including wrenches, welders, grinders, crimp tools, soldering irons, wave solder machines, surface mount technology machines, wire wrap tools and strippers, solder pots, spray degreasers or cleaning units. 

 

Other Qualifications, Experience, or Requirements: 

  • Regular and predictable attendance required. 

  • Must be able to work a fixed or rotating shift schedule, including daily or weekend overtime. 

  • Work beyond the traditional 40 hours per week may be required as workload or projects dictate, including weekends and holidays.

  • Works with materials including welding, solder (lead), flux, cleaning fluids (e.g., isopropyl alcohol), compressed air, conformal coating, and paint materials. 

  • The employee occasionally is exposed to fumes or airborne particles, chemicals, outdoor weather conditions, sources of vibration, uneven walking surfaces, and non-weather related extreme heat, humidity, or wetness.    

  • The employee may occasionally work in proximity to moving mechanical parts.   

  • The noise level in the work environment is moderate, but may be loud when working in manufacturing areas. 

  • PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) such as hardhat, safety glasses, steel toe shoes, Kevlar sleeves, hearing protection, etc. may be required in designated engineering, industrial, or manufacturing areas.  Personal attire standards may apply.
