Summary
The Senior Industrial Software Engineer is responsible for designing, developing, and supporting industrial software solutions for manufacturing automation equipment. The role specializes in Human Machine Interface (HMI) development, industrial software applications, and software integration while contributing throughout the machine development lifecycle, including system integration, commissioning, troubleshooting, and continuous improvement. Working within the Manufacturing Engineering team, the engineer collaborates with mechanical, electrical, controls, manufacturing, and project teams to deliver reliable, scalable, and user-friendly automation solutions. The role requires a strong software development background together with a broad understanding of automation systems to ensure successful machine performance and operational excellence.
Essential Duties
The following duties are considered essential to the successful performance of this role:
- Design, develop, test, and maintain industrial software applications using C#, .NET, and Microsoft Visual Studio.
- Design and maintain intuitive Human Machine Interface (HMI) applications for automated manufacturing equipment.
- Develop and integrate software with SQL Server databases, PLC control systems and industrial devices.
- Support Project Management, machine commissioning, Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT), Site Acceptance Testing (SAT) and production start-up activities.
- Troubleshoot and resolve software and system integration issues to ensure reliable machine performance.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary engineering teams throughout machine development and implementation.
- Produce and maintain technical documentation, software releases, and engineering records.
- Provide timely technical support to manufacturing operations and internal customers while promoting continuous improvement
Primary Duties
In addition to the essential responsibilities, the role is expected to contribute to the following broader areas:
Software Development & HMI
- Develop scalable, maintainable, and reusable software solutions for manufacturing equipment.
- Improve operator usability through effective HMI design and software architecture.
- Support software lifecycle activities including enhancements, upgrades, bug fixes, and version management.
Machine Development & System Integration
- Participate in machine development projects from concept through production release.
- Work closely with mechanical, electrical, and PLC engineers to ensure successful integration of machine subsystems.
- Develop a working understanding of overall machine architecture to support effective software design and troubleshooting.
Engineering Support & Continuous Improvement
- Investigate machine issues using structured engineering problem-solving techniques.
- Support engineering validation activities, design reviews, and risk assessments.
- Recommend improvements that enhance machine reliability, maintainability, and production efficiency.
Project & Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Coordinate deliverables within project schedules.
- Support communication with global engineering teams, suppliers, and manufacturing sites.
- Share technical knowledge and contribute to engineering standards and best practices
Essential Qualifications
To perform this role successfully, candidates must meet the following requirements:
Education
- Bachelor's Degree in Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, Automation Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
Experience
- Minimum 5 years of industrial software development experience within an automation or manufacturing environment.
- Demonstrated experience developing HMI applications using C# and Microsoft .NET technologies.
- Experience integrating software with SQL Server databases and industrial automation systems.
- Experience supporting machine commissioning, troubleshooting, or production equipment.
Technical Knowledge
- Strong proficiency in C#, .NET Framework, and Microsoft Visual Studio.
- Strong understanding of object-oriented programming and software development best practices.
- Knowledge of HMI development principles and industrial software architecture.
- Fundamental understanding of PLC systems, industrial communication, and machine operation.
- Working knowledge of Windows operating systems and Microsoft Office applications.
Professional Competencies
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication in English.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities.
- Willingness to travel internationally (approximately 10–15%) when required
Preferred Qualifications/Experiences
The following qualifications/experiences are considered advantageous but are not mandatory:
- Experience with Beckhoff, Siemens, Allen-Bradley, or Mitsubishi PLC platforms.
- Familiarity with IEC 61131-3 programming concepts.
- Experience with Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES).
- Knowledge of industrial communication protocols such as EtherCAT, Ethernet/IP, Profinet, Modbus TCP, or OPC UA.
- Experience integrating vision systems, RFID technologies, or motion control systems.
- Exposure to machine validation, FAT, SAT, and production start-up activities.
- Knowledge of engineering methodologies such as Root Cause Analysis (RCA), Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA), and risk assessments.
- Basic understanding of mechanical systems, electrical wiring, and industrial machine design principles.
- Experience working in multinational manufacturing environments.
- Additional language skills such as French or German
Work Environment
Onsite / Hybrid:
- Employee works primarily in an office environment, within a well-ventilated area, and is exposed to moderate noise levels.
Work Requirements
- Compliance with all relevant HID Global policies and procedures related to Quality, Security, Safety, Business Continuity, and Environmental systems.
- Travel and fieldwork, including international travel may be required. Therefore, employee must possess, or be able to acquire a valid passport.
